Global Ambassador: Cuba Fundraiser

May 15, 2023

My name is Julie Watson, and I am a fellow congregant at LaGrave and have been in contact with Bruce since Abimael Diaz joined our student community. I met Abimael when he first started at Grand Rapids Christian High School and was placed in English Lab. English Lab is a course designed for our first-year international students that serve as a place to learn about living and studying in an American school. From day one, we have been blessed by Abimael’s presence! He is thoughtful, engaged in the learning process, and loves to share his background and culture with others.

My role here at the high school is with the International Student Program, and four years ago, I created the Global Ambassadors Club. The Global Ambassador Club is a service-leadership club with meetings and social activities that aim to have an impact by broadening global perspectives, developing cultural understandings, and creating a passion for God’s people. Our organization has approximately 30 regular attendees (both international and domestic students) and is led by seven student leaders. Over the last three years, we have held a fundraiser at the close of our school year to provide support to missions around the world. Because of the connection with Abimael, our Global Ambassador group chose to raise money this year for missions in Cuba. This week (May 16, 17, and 18), our students will have a table set up in the Lower Town Square of the high school and sell ice cream, stickers, milk tea boba, and treats to the student body to raise money for this cause. We are excited to be able to give back to the communities that enrich ours here at GRCHS!

We are thrilled to know that our Global Ambassador funds can go to support the Cuban Summer Program. My hope is that our small contribution and our continued relationship with Abimael and the Diaz family have a long-range impact on the global Church.
